Issue/Introduction

This article outlines the steps to add a unclaimed vSAN disks in a vSAN cluster with Deduplication and Compression enabled

Environment

VMware vSAN

Resolution

  • Recreate the disk group using all the disks.
  • Follow the below procedure:
  1. Place the ESXi host in maintenance mode with Full Data Migration
  2. Delete the disk group
    esxcli vsan storage remove -u <VSAN Disk Group UUID>
  3. Recreate the disk group:
    esxcli vsan storage add -s naa.xxxxxx -d naa.xxxxxxx -d naa.xxxxxxxxxx -d naa.xxxxxxxxxxxx (option "s" is for cache disk and option "d" is for capacity disk)
  4. Exit maintenance mode
  5. Allow for data resync before performing any other administrative task in the vSAN cluster
