Guest OS Customization for SLE 12 SP2-SP5 and SLE 15.x does not support NetworkManager and requires the use of Wicked for network configuration.

Issue/Introduction

When cloning a VM with a guest OS version of SLE 12 SP2-SP5 and SLE 15.x, and attempting to set a static IP using Guest OS Customization, the VM is cloned successfully, but the static IP configuration fails.

Environment

VMware ESXi 7.0.x
VMware ESXi 8.0.x
VMware ESXi 9.0.x

Cause

For SLE 12 SP2-SP5 and SLE 15.x, Guest OS Customization does NOT support NetworkManager Keyfile profile.

Resolution

Change the network setup method from NetworkManager to Wicked Service within the Guest Operating System.

The steps to do this vary depending on the version of SLED used.
