Issue/Introduction

  • Unable to power on the vCenter VM from the ESXi host with the error message : 

Unable to power on VM failing with "Unable to enumerate all disks."

  • While checking the ESXi host /var/run/log/hostd.log we see entries with respect to No such device (##).

Environment

  • VMware vCenter Server 7.x
  • VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

The vCenter by default has only 17 hard disks, a new RDM disk was attached from unknown sources to the vCenter VM.

Resolution

  • Remove the unknown hard disk from the vCenter VM using the ESXi host UI:

    • Navigate to the vCenter VM.

    • Right click >> edit settings >> remove the unknown Hard disk.

  • Power on the VM.
