Summary Report and Detail report show different number of Malware

Issue/Introduction

The following reports were generated by the same Report Request, but the total number of malware was not the same.

Email Summary Report (PDF) - Malware volume by domain
Email Detailed Report (CSV) - Anti Malware

For example, the Email Summary Report (PDF) shows 1404 as "Total Malware volume", whereas, the Email Detailed Report (CSV) shows 1420 emails. The message with the same PEN ID is not counted in the Summary report in comparison to the Detailed report.

Resolution

This works by design, as The Summary Report counts emails based on their total number. If a message has the same Message ID, it is handled as the same message, i.e. it is counted as 1 message. However, The Detailed Report includes individual email details along with the number of recipients per email which explains the discrepancy and differences in counts.
