VMware vSAN

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Several inaccessible objects showing under virtual objects; however, the skyline health does not show any error about object health

  • Cli does not report any inaccessible objects.

  • The inaccessible objects belong to some VMs and all these VMs have 2 vSAN datastores listed under the datastore tab.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x

VMware vSAN 8.x

Cause

All these VMs have datastore ISO selected under CD/DVD drive referencing the older vSAN datastore.

This could also be the issue when the VM is running on a snapshot disk due to which the other vSAN datastore is being referenced.

Because there was a reference to the older vSAN datastore still on these VMs, the inaccessible objects show up.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, either do one of the following:

  • Consolidate the virtual machine snapshot. For steps and for more information, see Consolidate Snapshots.
  • Unmount the ISO file currently mounted to the virtual machine.

vSphere Web Client:

  1. Right click the virtual machine and select Edit Settings.
  2. Expand the CD/DVD drive, verify if an ISO file is mounted to virtual machine from another datastore.

  3. From the drop-down next to the CD/DVD drive, select Client Device.
  4. Click OK to save the changes to the virtual machine.

After making the changes, the inaccessible objects wont show up anymore.
