Issue/Introduction

• When creating a replication the task progress until 76% and fails with error "Operation cancelled due to an unexpected error"
  
  
• On the VM replicated source site on replicator appliance in /opt/vmware/h4/log/replicator.log you can see entries similar to:
  ERROR - [##-########-####-####-####-############-#####-##-##-##-##] [pc-task-monitor-4] c.v.h.r.monitoring.JobTaskUpdateHandler  : Task ########-####-####-####-############ has failed.
com.vmware.vim.binding.vim.fault.ReplicationDiskConfigFault: The vSphere Replication configuration for disk with key 2,000 of the virtual machine has an issue: Replication not supported for disk type or backend.



Environment

VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.x

Cause

The I/O Filter (named vmwarelwd), that is leveraged by data protection solutions like Dell EMC PowerProtect Backup to take Transparent Snapshots is in use.

Please check the affected VM custom attributes to validate if the VM is backed by a backup or any other solution.

For example below is for Dell EMC PowerProtect Backup.

Resolution

To work around this issue, you must disable the lwd filter from the Dell EMC PowerProtect Backup and use VADP type of backup which will use Proxy but not the lwd filter.

Also selective vm's can be disabled from lwd filter by following the step number 2 from article: https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article?articleNumber=344906

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:

• Removal of the vmwarelwd filter from a VM that is being protected will result in a full-sync, protection to be re-enabled on the VM at a later point.
• The execution of the script attached on the linked KB should be performed only against VMs that are no longer to be protected by VMware Live cyber recovery or other solutions that leverage the vmwarelwd filter.
• The script attached  in the linked KB utility will not reconfigure a VM to remove any filter other than that of the vmwarelwd ioFilter.
