Issue/Introduction

  • VM is in hung state, unable to connect to VM via ssh/rdp, VM is showing black screen when connecting via VM console
  • When trying to manage the VM (e.g. poweron/poweroff etc.) it takes a long time for the task to run and may end up with timeout
  • Below error messages are observed in /var/run/log/vmkernel.log (naa.ID of the LUN refers to the storage device where the VMs are residing on) :

VMW_SATP_ALUA: satp_alua_getTargetPortInfo: 173: Could not find relative target port ID for path "vmhbaX:CX:TX:LX" - Not found (195887107)
NMP: nmpDeviceAttemptFailover: 647: Retry world failover device "<naa.ID of the LUN>" - issuing command 0x45da86f1b888
    NMP: nmpCompleteRetryForPath: 364: Retry cmd (0x28) (0x45da86f1b888) to dev "<naa.ID of the LUN>" failed on path "vmhbaX:CX:TX:LX" H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x5 0x25 0x0.
    NMP: nmp_PathDetemineFailure: 3527: cmd (0x28)PDL error (0x5/0x25/0x0) - path vmhbaX:CX:TX:LX device <naa.ID of the LUN>  - triggering path failover
NMP: nmpCompleteRetryForPath: 394: Logical deice "<naa.ID of the LUN>": awaiting fast path state update before retrying failed command again...

  • It's found that there're three paths configured for the mentioned storage device, one of them appears to be incorrectly configured

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Cause

Incorrect storage path configuration

Resolution

To resolve the issue the incorrect path is disabled from vSphere Client:

  1. Click the ESXi host you want to modify. Click the Configuration tab.
  2. Click Storage Devices.
  3. Click the LUN mentioned in the error message
  4. Click Paths.
  5. In the Paths dialog, select the unintended path and click Disable
