Issue/Introduction

During an NSX edge cluster upgrade through SDDC Manager, the upgrade process may fail with the following error:

"Check if Memory and CPU allocated is less than the default allocated for the VM form factor: [Upgrade of edge nodes [...] will either increase its CPU or memory. Kindly make sure the system has sufficient resources.]"

This error occurs even when there are adequate resources available in the cluster.

The issue can be identified by:

  1. Seeing the upgrade process for NSX edge nodes stall or fail in SDDC Manager
  2. Observing that some edge nodes successfully upgrade while others do not
  3. Finding the specific resource allocation error message in the SDDC Manager logs in /var/log/vmware/vcf/lcm/ like lcm-debug.log

Environment

  • VMware NSX-T Data Center 3.x
  • VMware NSX 4.x and above
  • VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 4.x and above
  • SDDC Manager

Cause

The issue occurs due to a resource validation check in SDDC Manager that incorrectly reports insufficient resources for the NSX edge node upgrade, despite adequate resources being available in the cluster.

Resolution

  1. Log in to the NSX Manager user interface.
  2. Navigate to System > Fabric > Nodes > Edge Transport Nodes.
  3. Identify the edge nodes that failed to upgrade through SDDC Manager.
  4. Continue the NSX edge upgrade process directly through the NSX UI:
    • Select the edge nodes that need to be upgraded
    • Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the upgrade
    • Note that NSX Edge nodes within a cluster are upgraded in serial mode so that when the upgrading node is down, other nodes in the cluster remain active to continuously forward traffic
    • The system allows a maximum of twenty simultaneous Edge upgrade unit groups
  5. During the upgrade process through the NSX UI, you will have options to:
    • Choose between Serial upgrade (upgrading Edge groups consecutively) or Parallel upgrade (upgrading Edge groups simultaneously)
    • Reorder the upgrade sequence of Edge upgrade unit groups if necessary
    • Pause the upgrade process after each Edge upgrade unit group completes
  6. Once all edge nodes are successfully upgraded through the NSX UI, return to SDDC Manager.
  7. Continue the remaining upgrade process through SDDC Manager as originally planned.
