VM stuck in an infinite consolidate disk file

Issue/Introduction

On the vCenter UI task menu, "consolidate virtual machine disk file" will be initiated even after a cold boot of the host.

 

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.x

Cause

The vCenter is still pushing the consolidation task back to the host even after the host was restarted

Resolution

• Login into the vCenter via putty and stop the vmware-vpxd service as per Stop, Start or Restart Services on vCenter Server 7.x/8.x.
  • Using the command: service-control --stop vmware-vpxd
• Then log it to the host via putty and restart the hostd service using the command: etc/init.d/hostd restart.
• After the hostd service is restarted then start up the vmware-vpxd service as per Stop, Start or Restart Services on vCenter Server 7.x/8.x.
  • Using the command: service-control --start vmware-vpxd

Additional Information

Note: Please ensure you arrange a downtime to consolidate the VM disk as soon as you can to prevent your disk space from filling up.
