Issue/Introduction

VM goes into hung / unresponsive state due to multiple task queued up.

You will see events in vCenter UI "Another task is already in progress"

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

VMware vCenter Server 7.x

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

When a virtual machine (VM) goes into a hung state, one possible reason is an overload of snapshot removal tasks initiated by backup software. If a removal task is still in progress and multiple subsequent tasks are initiated, the system can become unstable.

It could also be other vCenter operations.

Resolution

  • Wait for the task to complete – Sometimes, the system just needs time.

  • Restart Management Agents – Run services.sh restart on the ESXi host. Restarting Management Agents in ESXi

  • Check if it is allowing to kill these tasks. Run esxcli vm process list to check running VMs and esxcli vm process kill -t soft -w <WorldID> to terminate stuck processes. Forcibly Stop a Virtual Machine with ESXCLI
  • Reboot the ESXi Host – If the tasks remain stuck and the VM is unresponsive, rebooting the ESXi host may be required to clear stale processes.

Additional Information

If this issue occurs frequently, consider optimizing backup scheduling to prevent excessive snapshot removal tasks from piling up.
