Issue/Introduction

Unable to create VMFS datastore on the newly added VROC NVMe device configured in RAID 1. The LUN is not listed during the datastore creation process.

Environment

ESXi 8.0..3 update 3 build-24022510 (standalone ESXi server)

Cause

Device contained previously existing partitions, which prevented the LUN from being listed during datastore creation.

Resolution

  • Use built-in ESXi utility i.e. partedUtil getptbl "/vmfs/devices/disks/DeviceName" to review the partition table details.
  • Delete existing partitions and subsequently reformat from the storage side and present to the host.
  • Create new datastores.
