Issue/Introduction

This document addresses the requirement to configure an alarm to monitor RPO violations within vSphere Replication.

In vCenter Server version 7.0 and 8.0, alarms related to vSphere Replication, such as the event com.vmware.vcHms.RpoViolatedEvent, are not visible by default in the list of available alarm definitions within the vSphere Client UI.

Environment

vCenter Server version 7.x

vCenter Server version 8.x

Resolution

Steps to add the custom alarm definition and create the alarm for RPO violation

  • Navigate to vCenter > Configure > Alarm Definitions > ADD

  • Provide Alarm Name

  • Select Target Type as Virtual Machines

  • vCenter will automatically apply this alert to all the virtual machines

  • For Alarm Rule 1 manually add argument com.vmware.vcHms.rpoViolatedEvent
  • Select appropriate alert level such as Warning / Critical etc. from the list

  • Add Reset Rule 1 by activating Radio button

  • Add com.vmware.vcHms.rpoRestoredEvent as an argument for the reset rule

  • Review the configuration and create the alarm.

  • Under the Actions section of the alarm configuration, you can define the desired response mechanism. Options include:
    • Sending an Email Notification

    • Triggering an SNMP Trap

  • Kindly configure the alarm actions according to the operational and monitoring requirements to ensure timely alerting and appropriate visibility.
