Virtual Machine fail to power on in Fusion due to disk lock

Issue/Introduction

Virtual Machine fails to power on with the following error message:

"Cannot open the disk ‘/Users/<User_Name>/Virtual Machines.localized/<VM_Name>/<VM_Name>.vmdk’ or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Module ‘Disk’ power on failed. Failed to start the virtual machine."

Cause

VM went down abruptly, and the disk lock was not removed.

Resolution

  • Follow the steps shared below to delete the unexpected lock file (.lck) and power on the VM:

    1. Quit/close Fusion App
    2. Navigate to the VM folder using 'Finder':
      • Open Finder > Go > Computer
      • Navigate to the VM folder
    3. Select/find the file <VM_Name>.vmwarevm
    4. Right click and click on "Show Package Contents"
    5. Find the lock file (.lck) and delete it.
    6. Power On the VM
