Issue/Introduction

When attempting to setup an IP Storage teaming the network adapters appear greyed out and unable to be added under 'Network Port Binding'.

Environment

Esxi 8.0u3, Standard vswitch, Two separate vlans, iSCSI Array.

Cause

Upon review GS observed the primary vmk was not configured in an Active/Unused configuration, which limited the Virtual Center's ability to consider vmnic4 and 5 as viable candidates for teaming.

Resolution

The following steps can be taken to address this misconfiguration:

  • Under Configure and navigate to Network/Virtual Switches
  • Select the iSCSI Portgroup,
  • Click the three dots next to the iSCSI portgrourp and select edit
  • Under the 'Teaming and Failover' select the appropriate adapter to drop unto unused.
  • Select Override
  • Select 'down' on the adapter not active, to the unused section.

Once this step is done:

  • Navigate to Storage Adapters
  • Select the iSCSI Initiator vmhba#
  • Navigate to 'Network Port Binding'
  • Select 'Add'
  • Select the Active Adapter for the first iSCSI vmk.
  • Select 'ok'

Solution Justification - Add supporting data for Solution Recommendation such as KBs:

Configuring ISCSI Adapter and Nic Teaming

Additional Information

Do note that an additional vmk will need to be created and added to the iSCSI switch, and the formerly 'unused adapter' placed in the active slot and previous active vmnic moved to 'unused'.  The add the new vmk vmnic to the network port binding workflow.
