Issue/Introduction

Unable to set/reconfigure 1-minute RPO value on the virtual machine. The minimum RPO value that is available is 5 minutes.

Environment

VMware vSphere Replication 8.x

VMware vSphere Replication 9.x

Cause

Configuring and re-configuring legacy replications to use enhanced vSphere Replication with an RPO lower than 5 minutes requires VMware Live Recovery license.

If there is no VMware Live Recovery license in the pair, you might get an error message during a configure or reconfigure operation.

Resolution

  • vSphere Replication has undergone some major enhancements in 9.x.
  • The now Enhanced vSphere Replication includes automated load balancing and scaling to achieve higher performance, and when enabled with VMware Live Recovery provides a 1 minute RPO. You need to move the existing workloads from Legacy to Enhanced vSphere replication.
  • Ensure you're licensed for the required features. The 1-minute RPO require VMware Live Recovery 9.x License.
  • Work with your VMware sales representative to buy VMware Live Recovery subscriptions using SKUs from the price book to facilitate immediate service consumption.

Additional Information

A 1-minute RPO requires sufficient bandwidth between source and target sites to keep up with change rates.

The underlying storage must support high write throughput and low latency, as 1-minute RPO generates many delta files and requires fast replication.
