Upgrade/Install NSX for particular ESXi failed with error "/etc/init.d/vdr-pre-upgrade', 'stop', 'upgrade']' terminated due to signal 9"

• Notice following errors in upgrade UI

Unexpected error while upgrading upgrade unit: Install of offline bundle failed on host <host-uuid> with error : [LiveInstallationError] VMware_bootbank_nsx-esx-datapath_<version>: Error in running [/etc/init.d/vdr-pre-upgrade stop upgrade]: Command '['/etc/init.d/vdr-pre-upgrade', 'stop', 'upgrade']' terminated due to signal 9 It is not safe to continue. Please reboot the host immediately to discard the unfinished update. cause = ('nsx-lcp-bundle(<version>)', 'vdr-pre-upgrade', "Error in running [/etc/init.d/vdr-pre-upgrade stop upgrade]: Command '['/etc/init.d/vdr-pre-upgrade', 'stop', 'upgrade']' terminated due to signal 9") vibs = ['VMware_bootbank_nsx-esx-datapath_<version>'] Please refer to the log file for more details.

• esxupdate.log shows vdr-pre-upgrade stop failed with sig 9

 Error in running [/etc/init.d/vdr-pre-upgrade stop upgrade]: Command '['/etc/init.d/vdr-pre-upgrade', 'stop', 'upgrade']' terminated due to signal 9

• At the same time, vmkernel.log shows nsx-datapath group ID missing.

env: could not get group id for <host/vim/vmvisor/nsx-datapath>
env: Unrecoverable exec failure: Failure during exec while original state already lost

Environment

VMware NSX 3.2.x

Cause

nsx-datapath resource group missing unexpectedly.

Resolution

• Reboot the problematic host.
• If same error still presents, reinstall the host and then re-attempt upgrade.
