Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • When trying to upload files to a folder on vSAN datastore, it fails with error: "Insufficient disk space on datastore":

  • There is more than enough space on vSAN datastore.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x

Cause

  • Folders on vSAN datastore are backed by vmnamespace object which are limited to default size of 255GB.

  • If any files exceed this size, or if any files are uploaded which will cause the folder's usage to exceed 255GB, the error "Insufficient disk space on datastore" will be seen.

Resolution

Files larger than 255GB cannot be uploaded to a folder on vSAN datastore.

Create a new folder to upload files, if the existing folder reaches 255GB usage.
