Issue/Introduction

  • Alert on vcenter of Log Disk exhaustion
  • /storage/log shows 80% used
  • 1G+ files in /var/log/vmware/sso/java....hprof
  • STS Health CHeck failed. Apr 18, 2025 1:20:00 PM  com.vmware.identity.health.StsHealthStatus main SEVERE: Caught exception while getting STS health.
  • Validation FAILED - Issue Instant 2025-04-18T13:05:02.317Z outside of clock tolerance 600000.

Environment

vCenter 7

Cause

Clock skew observed at same time STS Health Check failed. Hprof files generated.

Resolution

  • Configure vCenter Server to use a reliable NTP server
  • Remove the large hprof heap dump files
  • Increase memory to vmware-stsd
    • Run the following to check memory sizing:
    • vcsa# cloudvm-ram-size -l
    • Double the memory allocated to the stsd service:
    • vcsa# cloudvm-ram-size -C <DoubleOutputFromPreviousStep>
    • Restart the stsd service:
    • vcsa# service-control --restart vmware-stsd
    • Confirm that the memory allocated to the stsd service changed:
    • vcsa# cloudvm-ram-size -l | grep vmware-stsd
  • Monitor the situation: Regularly check the /storage/log partition for new heap dump files and available disk space.
