Issue/Introduction

  • VM stops replicating with a message : "System has paused replication: Disk added to VM"

  • VM configured for protection by vSphere Replication is a backup proxy VM.
  • hostd logs show sub=Hbrsvc entries stating: VM VMNAME configuration does not include a replication specification for disk (deviceKey=2001).

Environment

vSphere Replication 8.x

vSphere Replication 9.x

VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

This issue occurs due to the Hot add method with Backup proxy VM.

VM disks are getting added to the Backup proxy VM as part of the backup process. HBR detects this addition and pauses the replication until the newly added disk is configured for replication.

It is a best practice to exclude backup proxy appliances from vSphere Replication.

Resolution

This is an expected behavior,

Workaround:
Change the Backup proxy VM configuration to not use the hot-add method.

Note: Please contact the backup software team to understand the impact of this change.

Additional Information

Instead of replicating proxies, deploy a separate, dormant backup proxy appliance directly at the DR site to be utilized during recovery operations.
