Issue/Introduction

While re-protecting the VMs from DR site to Prod site after failover, the reprotect tasks fail with the error below on UI.

Unable to reverse replication for the virtual machine 'VM_NAME'. Unable to configure replication for virtual machine 'VM_NAME' because group 'VM_NAME' cannot be created. Another virtual machine 'VM_NAME' that has the same instance UUID '50109559-2b13-87df-9a82-########' already exists on protection site PROTECTION_GROUP'.

Environment

VMware vSphere Replication 8.8

VMware Live Recovery 9.x

Cause

The issue is seen when the failover task left the VMs on the primary/prod site in a STALE state and recovered on the DR site.

It would also show the STALE VMs at the primary site as below under status.

The source virtual machine has been deleted or it cannot be found.

Replication 'VM_NAME' on the source site has been force-stopped.

Resolution

The steps in the below article can be used to resolve the issue.
