VTEP faulty Alarm after NIC firmware update

Issue/Introduction

  • You updated NIC firmware version.
  • NSX shows Faulty VTEP Alarm after ESXi host boot.
  • All BFD tunnels show down on ESXi host.
    • CLI: nsxdp-cli bfd sessions list --tunnel --evpn
    • Log Bundle: commands/dump-bfd-info.py.txt

Environment

VMware ESXi 7.0 Update 3

NSX 4.1 or later

Cause

The NIC driver version was not compatible with the firmware version.

Resolution

Use compatible driver.
The minimum driver version for NIC is listed in IO Devices - Broadcom Compatibility Guide.
For the latest driver version, contact OEM vendor.

To show NIC driver and firmware version on ESXi host:

  • CLI: esxcli network nic get -n vmnic#
    NOTE: Replace vmnic# with actual vmnic such as vmnic0.
  • Log Bundle: commands/nicinfo.sh.txt
