Issue/Introduction

  • You are following the guidance in Tutorial: Using tags in Automation Assembler to manage vSphere resources
  • When reviewing the virtual machine in the vSphere Client you cannot find the tags on the virtual machine which is from the blueprint you requested.
  • Capability and Constraint tagging otherwise has no issues.
  • The tag in question may show up in Aria Automation with a type of both Discovered and User Defined.

Environment

VMware Aria Automation 8.x

VMware vSphere 7.x/8.x

Cause

The service account used by the VMware Aria Automation vSphere cloud account was missing the required permissions to complete vSphere tagging operations.

The account may only have a singular provided authorization similar to the below:

  • Assign or Unassign vSphere tag on object

Resolution

Update the permissions for the VMware Aria Automation service account within vCenter to include all required tagging permissions:

  • Assign or Unassign vSphere tag
  • Assign or Unassign vSphere tag on object
  • Create vSphere tag
  • Delete vSphere tag
  • Edit vSphere tag
  • Create vSphere tag category
  • Delete vSphere tag category
  • Edit vSphere tag category

After adjusting these permissions, redeploy a virtual machine using VMware Aria Automation and verify that objects are correctly tagged within the vSphere client.

Additional Information

Permissions requirements are documented in the official VMware Techdocs:
