Issue/Introduction

If a controller module fails (IOM), the controller will fail over and run on a single controller module until the redundancy is restored.  In a dual-controller module configuration, controller modules and IOMs are hot-swappable, which means you can replace one module without halting I/O to disk groups, or powering off the enclosure.  In this case, the second controller module takes over operation of the storage system until you install the new.

Security Analytics uses Dell storage arrays for their storage needs.

Environment

Dell ME4084
Dell VA084
Dell ME4 storage array

Cause

The controller has failed and needs to be replaced.

Resolution

Always follow proper ESD precautions when replacing controllers.  To remove the failed controller:

  1. If there is an LED indicator light, identify which controller needs to be replaced using the indicator LED.
  2. Label and disconnect any cables connected to the controller.
  3. Grab the module latch and squeeze the flange and handle together to release the latch handle.
  4. Swing the latch handle out to release the controller.

  5. Slide the controller out from its slot.

To install the new controller:

  1. Check to make sure all pins are straight and undamaged
  2. With the latch in the open position slide the new controller into the empty slot as far as it will go.
  3. Secure the controller in place by manually closing the latch
  4. Reconnect all the cables
