Issue/Introduction

  • After VM deployment, manual IP changes made directly in vCenter (outside of vRA) are not reflected in VMware Aria Automation, causing an IP mismatch. This mismatch prevents the IP address from being released or updated correctly within VMware Aria Automation, leaving it allocated but unused.
  • VMware Aria Automation’s network allocation retains the original IP, unable to release it back to the IPAM pool.
  • Errors such as "IP address #.#.#.# is already allocated to a different resource null" may occur.

Environment

VMware Aria Automation 8.18.x

Cause

Manual IP changes outside of VMware Aria Automation led to synchronization issues between vCenter and VMware Aria Automation.

Resolution

To resolve this, we unregistered and re-registered the VM in VMware Aria Automation, which released the IP and made it available for reassignment.

Step 1: Unregister the VM from VMware Aria Automation

  • Log in to the VMware Aria Automation (vRA) portal using your credentials.
  • Navigate to Infrastructure → Virtual Machines in the left-hand menu.
  • Search for the VM you wish to unregister by either typing the VM name or filtering through the list.
  • Select the VM, then click on the Actions dropdown menu.
  • Choose Unregister to unregister the VM from VMware Aria Automation.

Note: This action does not affect the VM in vCenter, only in VMware Aria Automation. The VM will remain in vCenter.

Step 2: Release the IP Address from VMware Aria Automation

  • After unregistering the VM, go to Infrastructure → Networks → IP Addresses.
  • Locate the IP address that was previously assigned to the VM.
  • Confirm that the IP is no longer being used by the VM (it should show as allocated but not in use).
  • Manually release the IP address from VMware Aria Automation.

Step 3: Re-register the VM in VMware Aria Automation.

  • Navigate back to Server Broker >> Consume >> Deployments>> Virtual Machines in the VMware Aria Automation portal.
  • Click on the VM to onboard and follow the instructions on the screen.

  • Once the VM is onboarded verify the IP assignment within VMware Aria Automation by navigating to the VM details.

Additional Information

  • Since this change is made outside of vRA, it is not detected by either VMware Aria Automation or IPAM, which results in the original IP remaining allocated but not released.
  • Manually updating IPs in vCenter is not supported, as VMware Aria Automation cannot detect or reconcile these external changes.
  • All IP modifications should be made through VMware Aria Automation to ensure proper synchronization and management.
