Issue/Introduction

Symptoms

  • Test recovery operation fails for one or more virtual machines.

  • The following error message is displayed during the test recovery process: "Cannot create a test bubble image for group 'GID-xxx-xxx-xxx' on vSphere Replication Server 'xxxxx'. The target path '[vsanDatastore] bexxx-xxxx-xxxx/vrTestImage' already exists

Environment

VMware Live Site Recovery 9.x

Cause

When a test recovery is initiated, a test bubble image is created on the datastore. Upon performing a cleanup, this test bubble image is expected to be removed. However, in certain cases, the cleanup process does not successfully delete the test bubble image folder from the datastore. As a result, subsequent test recoveries fail because the target path already exists.

Cause Validation

Navigate to the Files section of the datastore specified in the error message.

Observe that the vrTestImage folder still exists. The last modified time of this folder matches the timestamp of the most recent cleanup operation.

In the History tab of the associated Recovery Plan, the last cleanup time aligns with the point after which test recoveries started failing.

Resolution

  • Create a temporary folder within the datastore and move the vrTestImage folder to this temporary location to avoid overwriting or conflicts.

  • Go back to the Site Recovery interface. Initiate the Test Recovery operation again.

  • Confirm that the test recovery completes successfully.

  • Once the test recovery is verified as successful, return to the datastore and delete the old vrTestImage folder from the temporary location.
