One or more data security software processes took down a server and crashed the Oracle database.
Customer's security team now wants to configure the processes probe to monitor ALL system processes on the given server without having to create so many individual profiles (over 100).
Deploy processes probe v4.85 or higher.
Using the processes probe Discovery Tab, choose RT-click and Add to create a Discovery profile and define default monitoring parameters for the monitoring profile. The discovery profile generates a monitoring profile based on the provided information. If the process is unavailable during profile creation, the monitoring profile will be created in the subsequent interval provided in the discovery tab. You can also create, adjust default parameters, or deactivate the discovery profiles.
Note that currently you cannot edit the discovered profiles once you setup monitoring of all of the system processes. For example, if you need to change the processes probe Max. memory threshold, you would have to delete the Discovery profile you created and create a new profile, then change the setting(s). This has been reported to engineering.
If you need to monitor a single process and enable QOS/alarms etc., after discovering and monitoring all processes, you need to create a separate, unique processes profile for the specific process.
Updates to the All systems monitoring profile you create should be done via the processes Discovery Tab where you can RT-click and Edit the profile.
Note that when you discover all processes, and set the Max. memory to alarm when it reaches what you consder to be the warning level for too much memory utilization for the given process, e.g., 25 GB, which is 26214400 in KB for the probe setting, a given process profile will throw an alarm if the threshold value is breached.
For Recognize process by, use name + command line and enter an asterisk *
Discovered processes->Monitoring profiles:
Notification
If you create a nas (alarm server) Auto-operator profile to send an email or text when the threshold is breached, make sure you set the AO rule action so that there is at least a few minutes delay using "On overdue age" in case the memory usage just temporarily spikes, as it may clear rather quickly as well.
