VM console black screen upon login on Ubuntu 24.04

Issue/Introduction

• VM guest is Ubuntu desktop 24.04
• Using VM's web console or VMRC console shows a black screen upon logging into guest os.
• Moving mouse upon login causes black screen
• Xorg or GNOME both produce issue with black screen.

Environment

• ESXi 8.x
• Ubuntu desktop 24.04

Cause

This is a known bug in Ubuntu 24.04 whereby moving the mouse upon login causes the screen to go black and not finish the login process.  This is not a VMware specific issue.

Resolution

This is not a VMware specific issue, recommendation is to upgrade to latest version.

 

Additional Information

Typically a reboot will fix issue for time being to allow screen to not go black upon login.
