Issue/Introduction

  • /var/run/log/vmkernel.log shows the below error:

Invalid memory allocation for VMM group: Admission check failed for memory resource

  • /vmfs/volumes/<datastore_UUID>/vmware.log shows below errors
Failed to apply memory configuration for VMM group

  • Cannot Power on VM: Admission check failed for memory resource.

Environment

vSphere ESXi 6.x
vSphere ESXi 7.x
vSphere ESXi 8.x

Cause

  • Migrating a virtual machine to an ESXi host of version 7.0 Update 2 or later by using vSphere vMotion might fail because the destination host requires larger virtual machine overhead memory than the source ESXi host.

Resolution

This issue is partially resolved starting with vSphere version 8.0.1c and later.
Issues may still occur during vMotion or soft VM power-on operations on Versions 8.0 U1c or higher.

To mitigate this, perform  the below workaround:

  • Open vCenter and select the desired cluster.
  • Select Configure => under Services => choose "vSphere DRS"On the far right and click the "EDIT" button.
  • In the Advanced Options column (last column), set the "NewDeltaAlloc" option to 1.
