Issue/Introduction

Symptom:

  • Creating a disk group throws an errror "A general system error occurred. Failed to write partition".

 

Environment

VMware vSphere vSAN 7.x

VMware vSphere vSAN 8.x

Cause

  • Issue occurs since the underlying disk is facing frequent power on resets and the host is unable to write on the disk therefore unable to create vSAN partitions on it.

  • In '/var/run/log/vobd.log' we found below log entries -

    2025-04-17T14:14:28.786Z: [scsiCorrelator] 31217903566us: [esx.problem.storage.connectivity.devicepor] Frequent PowerOn Reset Unit Attentions are occurring on device naa.################. This may indicate a storage problem. Affected datastores: Unknown.
    2025-04-17T14:14:31.535Z: [scsiCorrelator] 31220094414us: [vob.scsi.scsipath.por] Power-on Reset occurred on naa.################

  • In '/var/run/log/vmkernel.log', we see below log entries indicates write error-
     2025-04-17T14:14:04.227Z cpu8:2097443)WARNING: HPP: HppThrottleLogForDevice:1136:

Resolution

  •  Reach out to the hardware vendor to fix the issue or get the disk replaced.
