Issue/Introduction

Symptoms :

During the process of upgrading, installing, or uninstalling VMware Tools, users may encounter errors preventing successful completion. These issues can arise due to a variety of reasons, including conflicts with existing versions, system configuration issues, or corruption in the VMware Tools package.

The guest operating systems shows following errors :

  • The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.  
  • Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "VMware Tools64.msi" in the box below.

Validation steps :

  • Ensure that you are using the latest compatible version of VMware Tools 
  • Verify that there are no conflicting VMware Tools versions installed.
  • Check system logs for additional details on the failure..

Cause

This is an issue with Microsoft Windows Installer. The problem can occur when the original install path from the older version of VMware Tools is invalid.

Resolution

NOTE :

  • Ensure that a complete backup of the virtual machine (VM) has been taken and verify that the backup is valid and functional.
  • Take an offline snapshot of the VM. This involves gracefully shutting down the VM before creating the snapshot to ensure data consistency and avoid potential issues.
