Unknown VM's on Storage after rolling back / reverting ESXi host after a failed upgrade

Issue/Introduction

After reverting to a previous version of ESXi after a failed upgrade, a number if inaccessible VMs appeared on host inventory. 

The virtual machines have been deleted and are no longer accessible. 

 

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vCenter Server 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x
VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

Old copy of ESXi database is still holding on to some old virtual machines that have been deleted and it thinks they are still registered to that host.

Resolution

1.  Virtual machines that are no longer in use or moved to another host showing inaccessible.

2. Remove the virtual machines from inventory

  • Log in to vSphere Client.
  • Find virtual machine that is shows inaccessible.
  • Select the virtual machine and go to Actions. 

  • Select remove from inventory.

3.  Virtual machine should be unregistered from host.

  • Return to vm registered to the host.
  • Inaccessible vm's should no longer be present.
