Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • The stretched cluster setup fails because no clusters are listed when attempting to assign the witness host.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x

VMware vSAN 8.x

Cause

  • The data nodes and the witness node are configured on the same Layer 2 (L2) network. Communication between the data nodes and the witness node must use Layer 3, as Layer 2 is not supported.

Resolution

  • Reconfigure the network between the data sites and the witness site to use Layer 3 connectivity.
  • vSAN supports both Layer 2 and Layer 3 communication between data sites. However, communication between the data sites and the witness site must be over Layer 3, as Layer 2 is not supported for this part of the topology.

  • The document below provides details on Layer 2 and Layer 3 support in vSAN configurations .
