Issue/Introduction

  • Following error is observed when trying to configure  sDRS Anti-Affinity Rule :

Default VM affinity conflict: All virtual disks of the virtual machines should be located on different datastores. To resolve the conflict either enable cluster wide default VM affinity or override all the virtual machines behavior for keeping VMDKs together.

Cause

At the sDRS cluster level, the advanced setting "Keep VMDKs together by default" is unchecked. As a result, intra-VM affinity is disabled for all virtual machines within the cluster. This results in a conflict between the two rules.

Resolution

To add virtual machines to a VM anti-affinity rule within a sDRS cluster, those virtual machines must be part of, and comply with, an intra-VM affinity rule within the same sDRS cluster.

To verify the option is checked :

1. Go to the sDRS Cluster
2. Navigate to Configure -> Services -> Storage DRS
3. Review the Advanced Options
4. Ensure "Keep VMDKs together by default" is checked.

Note : The option "Keep VMDKs together by default" may or may not keep the VM level VMDKs together depending upon various factors like utilization, I/O's etc.
