Issue/Introduction

If a component backup is triggered closely after another successful backup, it can fail with the error message containing "Backup failed - mounting db data directory".

This includes consecutive on-demand backups, back-to-back scheduled and on-demand backup or on-demand backup immediately followed by patch.

Environment

  • VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0
  • VCF Identity Broker
  • VCF Automation 9.0

Cause

  • Backup operation creates a separate job to perform one of its subtasks.
  • This job is not cleaned up for 30 minutes after completion.
  • Subsequent backup triggers a new job for this subtask, but can incorrectly use the status of the previously completed job.
  • As a result, backup can proceed before the subtask is actually completed, leading to backup failure.

Resolution

Retry the operation in 30 minutes and update your workflows to ensure backup and patch operations are not executed within 30 minutes of each other.
