Messaging Gateway

Issue/Introduction

In some situations it is neccessary to migrate the working Messaging Gateway (SMG) from an older virtual machine to new virtual machine instance.

Resolution

Migrating SMG systems to new virtual machines is relatively straightforward but care should be taken to ensure no loss of configuration or interruption of service.

Preparation

  1. Download the SMG ISO matching the current installed version from the Broadcom Support portal
  2. Download the license file from the Broadcom Support portal
  3. Collect the following network information from the existing SMG systems from Administration > Configuration > Host > Ethernet page:
    - IP addresses
    - subnet masks
    - DNS servers
    - default router.
  4. Install Messaging Gateway from ISO into a new virtual machine. This must be the same version as the old SMG system.

Control Centers / Control Center + Scanner hosts

  1. Take a full backup of the Control Center and store it off box
  2. Bootstrap the new control center VM using a temporary IP address
Please see the Messaging Gateway Installation Guide for instructions on bootstrapping a new SMG virtual machine
  3. Complete the initial setup and licensing through the GUI.
  4. (optional) Back up audit log data from the old 10.9.0 scanner using the command line mallog command
  5. Shut down the old Control Center virtual machine (Administration > Shutdown)
  6. Restore the backup taken on 10.9.0 prior to upgrade to 10.9.1 to the new SMG 10.9.0 virtual machine
Note: The restore will not overwrite the network configuration or default admin credentials set up during bootstrap
  7. (optional) Restore audit log data to the new 10.9.0 scanner
  8. Change the IP address of the new SMG Control Center / Control Center + Scanner to the IP of the original virtual machine.

Scanner only hosts

Scanners do not require backup or restore unless you want to preserve audit log data.

For each standalone scanner system:

  1. Install Messaging Gateway 10.9.0 from ISO into a new virtual machine
  2. (optional) Back up audit log data from the old 10.9.0 scanner using the command line mallog command
  3. (optional) Restore audit log data to the new 10.9.0 scanner
  4. Shut down the old SMG Scanner (Administration > Shutdown)
  5. Delete the old scanner entry from Administration > Configuration in the new Control Center VM
  6. Bootstrap the new scanner VM with the same network information as the old scanner.
  7. Add the new scanner to the new Control Center via the Administration > Configuration > Add Scanner wizard
