Issue/Introduction

Summary:

This document covers requesting, applying, and activating a license for GT Subset, also known as Data Subset or just Subset.

Environment

Release: TDMTDD99000-3.5-Test Data Manager-for Test Data on Demand
Component:

GT Subset/Data Subset/Subset release versions 3.1 and above.

You may have received Subset as part of the Test Data Manager product. This document covers licensing for TDM release versions 3.1 and above.

Cause

CA Test Data Manager (TDM) requires a compound license for Datamaker and all other components, including Subset. You will be applying the same key you received for TDM, also known as Datamaker, for Subset's license activation.

If you do not already have a TDM license, you can request one using a Customer Care Case Request form: https://support.broadcom.com/

Provide your Enterprise Site ID, Product Name (CA Test Data Manager), and release number.

When the request is processed, you will receive an activation key by email in the form of a text file. The key should be one long line of alphanumeric characters.

Resolution

Instructions:

There are two ways to apply the Subset license. You can either apply the license from within Subset or from within Datamaker.

Apply the license from within Subset:

  1. Launch GT Subset by double clicking the icon on your desktop, or by going to your GTDatamaker directory and double clicking on the GTSubset.exe.
    - The default file path for the GTDatamaker directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Grid-Tools\GTDatamaker
    - It is also recommended that you right click on the icon or executable and ‘Run as administrator’ when starting the program.
    - You may immediately be prompted for a license. Skip to step 5 if you were.
  2. Enter the database connection details you would like to use for Subset.
    This includes:
    - Connection Name
    - Username
    - Password
    - DBMS
    - Server
    - Port Number
    - Database
    - Default User

  3. Click the 'Save' button.

  4. Click the 'Connect' button to enter Subset.

  5. You will be prompted for license with a pop up saying: 'No valid license found. Do you want to enter a new activation key?'

  6. Paste the contents of the text file you were given for your Test Data Manager/Datamaker activation key.

  7. Click the ‘OK’ button.

  8. You should now be taken to the Subset page.

Apply the license from within Datamaker:

  1. Launch Datamaker by double clicking the icon on your desktop, or by going to your GTDatamaker directory and double clicking on the gtdatamaker.exe.
    - The default file path for the GTDatamaker directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Grid-Tools\GTDatamaker
    - It is also recommended that you right click on the icon or executable and ‘Run as administrator’ when starting the program.

  2. On the login page, enter your User Name and Password. Then click the green checkmark in the bottom, right-hand corner of the window or hit ‘Enter’ on your keyboard.
  3. Connect to the Source and Target profile connections that you would like to use for your test by checking the boxes next to the profile name. Click on the green icon at the bottom, left-hand side of the window to enter Datamaker.
    - If you get an ‘Unable to connect to service layer’ error message, you will need to check that in your Windows Services, the ‘GridToolsRemotePublish’ and the GridToolsTDoDService’ services are listed as ‘Started’ and running.
    - You can also choose to ignore this error message by clicking the ‘OK’ button. It is not necessary to have these services running to enter Datamaker or use all of the features it offers.

  4. From within Datamaker, click on the 'Data Subset' tab in the toolbar at the top of the screen.

  5. Choose 'Design Extracts and Transactions' from the drop down list.

  6. A Data Source connection details window will appear. Choose a profile you would like to connect to, enter your password, and click the green connection button in the bottom, left-hand side of the screen.

  7. You will be prompted with this message: 'No valid license found. Do you want to enter a new activation key?'

  8. Click the 'Yes' button.

  9. Paste the contents of the text file you were given for your Test Data Manager/Datamaker activation key.

  10. Click the ‘OK’ button.

  11. You should now be taken to the Subset page.
