Issue/Introduction

Symptoms :

  • vCenter Server applaince upgrade failed with the following error message :

Found incompatible products: SDDC Manager-4.5.1.0 with target vCenter Server appliance-8.0.3.00400.

This vCenter Server appliance is a part of VMware Cloud Foundation deployment. You must upgrade the appliance by using SDDC Manager. Upgrading vCenter Server by using the GUI installer might result in breaking the connection to SDDC Manager.

  • The current requirement is only to upgrade the vCenter server only.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 4.5.x
VMware Cloud Foundation 5.X

Cause

The vCenter server is part of  VMware Cloud Foundation deployment hence, the regular vCenter server upgrade is not supported.

Resolution

The current environment is based on a VMware Cloud Foundation setup; hence, a vCenter server appliance-only upgrade is not supported from VMware vCenter Server 7.0.3.01900 [vCenter Server 7.0 Update 3q] to vCenter Server appliance-8.0.3.00400 [vCenter Server 8.0 Update 3d].
Follow the VCF upgrade process to upgrade your environment.
