ESXi host upgrade fails during pre-check with an error "The Update Pre Check Task failed, check the iDRAC connectivity/credentials"

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Pre-check for the ESXi host upgrade using vLCM  fails with an  "The Update Pre Check Task failed, check the iDRAC connectivity/credentials"

 

•   While running the pre-check, Hardware update action check reports "UPDATE_PRE_CHECK for host <hostname> 'FAILED' on HSM 'Dell OMEVV Plugin".

 

• OpenManage Enterprise Plugin provided by the hardware vendor may report error while launching from the vCenter Server
  Error: "fetching sensor health failed on devices <device_name>.  Check the iDRAC connectivity/credentials.

 

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.x 
VMware vCenter Server 8.x 

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x 
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x 

Cause

• The precheck failed on the hardware vendor's Hardware Support Manager (HSM) OMEVV plugin which is registered with the vCenter server.

Note: The Hardware Support Manager (HSM) is a software solution provided by the hardware vendor, typically delivered as an OVF (Open Virtualization Format) image. Once deployed, the HSM includes a plug-in that registers itself as an extension within the vCenter Server. This integration allows for streamlined hardware management and support, enabling enhanced compatibility checks and firmware updates within the vSphere environment.

 

• In the following log /var/log/vmware/vmware-updatemgr/vum-server/vmware-vum-server.log file of the vCenter Server, this error is reported by the hardware support manager provided by the hardware vendor: "hsm: com.dell.plugin.OpenManager_HWSupportManager is FAILED"
