Issue/Introduction

The following workflow may result in this issue occuring:

  • Configure Local SPAN Port Mirroring session in NSX.
  • Perform a Storage vMotion for the mirroring destination VM.
  • vDS Port Mirroring stops working after the VM Storage vMotion completes.
  • In ESXi host's vmkernel.log, the following log may be observed :
    Mirror.cswitch: VSwitchMirrorSessionRemove:4858

Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.

Environment

  • VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x
  • VMware vCenter Server 8.x
  • VMware NSX 4.x

Cause

When the VM switchport is changed for the same dvport during storage vMotion, it needs to be updated for the destination port entity in mirror session which does not happen on impacted versions.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in VMware ESXi 9.0.1 and later.

Workaround:

  • Compute Migrate (vMotion) the mirror destination VM to a different host, then migrate it back to the original host.
