Issue/Introduction

  • Attempting to copy, move or deploy from template fails with following errors in VMware Cloud Director(VCD):

  • Template resides on OrgvDC1 and the modify/deployment tasks are successful within the same OrgvDC, however modify/deployment tasks to another OrgvDC(for ex: OrgvDC2) fails with error mentioned above
  • In /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/vcloud-container-debug.log on the Cloud Director cell, you see clone task fails with entries similar to:

    ERROR    | storage-fabric-activity-pool-75932 | FutureUtil                     | Failed to clone VM | requestId=#####-####-####-####-#######,request=POST https://vcd.example.com/api/catalog/#####-####-######-######/action/copy,requestTime=###########,remoteAddress=##.##.##.##,userAgent=Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 ...,accept=application/*+xml;version 40.0.0-alpha vcd=#####-####-####-####-######,task=#####-####-####-####-###### activity=(com.vmware.vcloud.backendbase.management.system.TaskActivity,urn:uuid:#####-####-####-####-######) activity=(com.vmware.vcloud.vdc.impl.CopyContentsActivity,urn:uuid:#####-####-####-####-######) activity=(com.vmware.vcloud.vdc.impl.CreateStoredVmActivity,urn:uuid:#####-####-####-####-######) activity=(com.vmware.vcloud.fabric.storage.storedVm.impl.CreateFromExistingStoredVmNonBlockingActivity,urn:uuid:#####-####-####-####-######)

  • Reviewing the template VMs from vCenter(select VM and edit settings), we noticed serial port was configured

Environment

VMware Cloud Director
vCenter Server

Cause

This issue occurs when the clone task fails across clusters in vCenter due to unsuccessful validation or access attempts to the serial port configuration of the involved template Virtual Machines (VMs)

Resolution

Remove the serial port configuration on the template VM from vCenter Remove hardware devices from VMs and perform template operations in VCD.

Additional Information

To effectively troubleshoot and resolve the cloning issue, please open a support request with vCenter support. To open support request, please refer -  Creating and managing Broadcom support cases.
