Issue/Introduction

In VMware Aria Operations, Day 2 operations allow users to perform various actions on objects (e.g., virtual machines, hosts, clusters, and datastores) directly from the platform. These actions, such as powering on/off VMs or adjusting resource allocations, can be critical for quick responses to issues or alerts. However, there might be instances where you want to restrict or enable these actions for a group of users, depending on their responsibilities or security requirements.

This article outlines the steps required to disable or enable Day 2 operations actions for all objects in Aria Operations for a specific group of users by modifying their role-based permissions.

Environment

Aria Operations 8.x

Resolution

To disable or enable Day 2 operations actions for a group of users in VMware Aria Operations, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Access Control Panel:

From the left menu in Aria Operations, click Administration and then select Control Panel.
Under the Control Panel, click the Access Control tile.

  2. Manage Roles:

    • Add a New Role:

In the Access Control section, click the Roles tab and then click Add to create a new role for the group of users who need restricted or full access to Day 2 operations.

    • Edit an Existing Role:

If you want to edit an existing role, select the role from the list and click Edit Role. Alternatively, you can click the EDIT ROLE button on the Role Details page.

  3. Assign Permissions:

    • Go to the Assign Permissions tab and expand the Inventory section.

    • Under Actions, you will find checkboxes for different actions that can be enabled or disabled for the role.

    • Enable Actions: If you want the users assigned to this role to have the ability to perform Day 2 operations, ensure the appropriate actions (e.g., power on/off VMs, adjust resources) are selected.

    • Disable Actions: If you wish to restrict these operations, simply deselect the relevant actions.

  4. Save the Role: Once you’ve made the necessary changes, click Save to apply the role configuration and then assign this role to user group/user
