Issue/Introduction

Error seen in vCenter UI:

Logs from the ESXi host with the issue show the following in /var/run/log/lifecycle.log

2025-03-28T13:55:31Z Er(11) lifecycle[2127716]: imagemanagerctl:90 esximage.Errors.InstallationError: VMware_bootbank_esx-base_8.0.3-0.60.24585383: Can not open /var/vmware/lifecycle/stagebootbank/vmx.v00 to write payload vmx.v00: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/vmware/lifecycle/stagebootbank/vmx.v00'

Environment

 ESXi 8.x

Cause

During staging process vmx.v00 failed to clean up. 

To verify if vmx.v00 failed to clean up run the following command checking for the presence of vmx.v00:

ls -lah /var/vmware/lifecycle/stagebootbank

 

Resolution

Rename and then attempt to stage again.

Command to rename:

mv /var/vmware/lifecycle/stagebootbank /var/vmware/lifecycle/stagebootbank.bak
