Issue/Introduction

5 identical UCS C220 M7 hosts are presented with 5 disks for vSAN.

2 of the hosts do not see the disks when viewed in vCenter > Host > Configure > Storage Devices.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.0
VMware vSAN 8.0

Cause

Disk drives can be in 2 modes for vSAN: Passthrough mode and RAID mode. Depending on the controller's personality, the drive mode needs to be set accordingly.

For example, the drive mode could have been set to 'unconfigured good' on CISCO host.

Resolution

Please contact the host vendor to investigate disk drive mode.

Reference the article SAS or SATA Controller Personality and Disk Config Mode to set the drives to one of the supported modes.
