1. The datastore is not mounted to the ESXi host/s
2. The datastore becomes inaccessible from the host/s
3. The datastore presentation from the storage array to the host is visible
4. VMs running on the specific datastore become invalid or start displaying their storage paths

To ensure the datastore is not overwritten with another filesystem partition double/triple check the device being selected before reformatting. If a reinstall of ESXi is required un-present all datastores from the host before doing the reinstall to ensure the wrong device is not accidentally selected.
Once the datastore has been reformatted there is no recovering from this. You can either restore VMs from backups or contact Data recovery services for data not recoverable by VMware Technical Support (326764). To prevent additional data loss, VMware advises contacting a data recovery company promptly without making any changes to determine if they can help.
