Issue/Introduction

  • Alarm related to other hardware object being in error state appears without any apparent hardware failures.
  • Clearing or acknowledging alarm doesn't stop from reappearance.
  • Checking the host management agent logs (hostd), you see periodic check reporting "Red" status for "Other" category.

Environment

VMware ESXi 7.x

VMware ESXi 8.x

VMware vCenter 7.x

VMware vCenter 8.x

Cause

  • IPMI System Event logging is disabled at the board management due to event space is full or near full.
  • Checking Sensor Data Record using command 'esxcli hardware ipmi sdr list' might show assert status for the related sensor. (Note: Availability of this sensor is hardware dependent)
Node-Sensor  Description                                   Entity-Instance  Computed Reading   Base Unit            Raw Reading
    -----------  --------------------------------------------  ---------------  -----------------  -------------------  -----------
0.254        System Management Software 1 SEL Fullness     33.1             SEL Almost Full    sensor-discrete      32           Event Logging Disabled
  • Alternatively, you can use the Server Management Tools like iDRAC/iLO to confirm the status of System Event logging

Resolution

Clear the System Event logging following the steps outline in  "Host IPMI system event log status" alarm in vCenter Server.
