Issue/Introduction

This article provides guidance on load balancing a stretched network after deploying additional Network Extension (NE) appliances in HCX. It discussed whether unextending or re-extending an NE will utilise the newly deployed appliances and whether enabling High Availability (HA) Group leverages the additional NE appliances.

Environment

VMware HCX

Resolution

The current Network Extension (NE) appliance hosting the stretched network does not automatically rebalance when additional NE appliances are deployed. The existing setup remains unchanged, and unextending or re-extending a network segment will not leverage the newly added NE appliances.

High Availability (HA) Considerations

  • An HA group can only consist of one Active and one Standby NE appliance.

  • Creating a multi-Active/Standby HA group by adding additional NE appliances is not supported.

  • After enabling HA, HCX automatically selects an available NE appliance to form the HA pair. Manual selection of appliances is not possible.

Utilising Additional NE Appliances

To utilise newly deployed NE appliances, unextend existing stretched segments and recreate the extended network. During the creation process, the UI will provide an option to select the desired NE appliance, enabling manual distribution of stretched networks and ensuring efficient use of the additional appliances.
