Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

When performing storage scan action, some LUN may lose path, causing the VM an abnormal status.

You can check the VM state in vSphere Client as follows:

This article will give some recommendations to monitor the above situation efficiently.

Environment

vCenter Server 7.0.x

vSphere ESXi 7.0.x

Resolution

You may select any one of the following three methods at your convenience

  1. According to the observed ESXi log file, you can use VMware Aria product or other third-party monitor software (like ELK) to capture vmkernel and vobd logs timely, by setting keywords to get info on storage connectivity.
  2. According to the actual use situation of VM, or when accessing vSphere Client UI, watch for abnormal states of VMs and datastores.
  3. According to define Alarm conditions yourself, for more detail on defining alarm, please refer to docs: https://techdocs.broadcom.com/cn/zh-cn/vmware-cis/vsphere/vsphere/7-0/vsphere-monitoring-and-performance-7-0/monitoring-events-and-alarms/set-an-alarm-in-the-vsphere-client/create-or-edit-alarms.html

Additional Information

The keywords of classical storage volumes lost are Lost connectivity to storage device at vobd.log

The above keywords are not suitable for your meeting situation. The error keywords need to be analyzed on a case-by-case basis. You can check the vobd and vmkernel log entries when the storage issue occurs. Search for error messages using the NAA ID, record the relevant error keywords, and configure them in Aria accordingly
