Custom groups permanently have an unknown status and members count is zero - VCF Operations

Issue/Introduction

• In the Operations > Configurations > Custom Groups page, the health status shows as unknown (greyed out) and the members count is zero for all custom groups in VMware Cloud Foundation Operations (VCF Operations).
  
  
  
  
• Dashboards display no value for the "total population" parameter.
• The Container adapter instance shows a collection status of 'None' or 'Maintenance Mode'.

Environment

• VCF Operations (formerly Aria Operations) 8.18.x
• VCF Operations 9.1.x

Cause

• The Container adapter instance has been placed in Maintenance Mode or stopped, preventing data collection for the objects managed by the adapter.
  
  
• Container adapter instance has collection status 'None'

Resolution

1. Go to Inventory > Custom groups > Environment and click on the custom group object to open it.
   
   
2. On the custom group object, verify the collection status and check if its 'None'
   
   
   
   
3. Go to Operations > Configurations > Inventory Management page
   
   
4. In the left pane click on Adapter instances > Container Adapter Instance 
   
   
5. Perform one of the following actions in the right pane depending on the current status:
   
   
   • If the status is 'None' or 'Maintenance', select the instance and click Start Collecting or End Maintenance Mode.
     
     
   • Verify that the collection status successfully changes to 'Collecting'.
     
     
     
     
6. Once the adapter starts collecting, confirm that the health of the groups and members count are visible.
