Issue/Introduction

Administrators may receive the Repository Retention VMware Aria Operations for Logs Admin System Alert via email.

Environment

Aria Operations 8.18.x

Cause

The Repository Retention Time alert is set off if the system detects that the log space will run out before the configured retention time period under the Log Management > Index Partition page.  It uses the current rate of ingestion and how much space is left to determine this.

Resolution

The retention period for the index partition can be decreased to stop this alert from occurring, or the storage can be increased so that the desired retention period can be supported.

The sizing estimator can be used to estimate the space that might be required for the desired retention period given certain parameters about the environment: https://vrlisizer.broadcom.com/overview

The Management > System Monitor > Statistics data can be used for the calculator, and the "Events Ingestion Volume (MBs Per Second) can be used to see if what the calculator indicates is accurate.

Once the storage required to support the desired retention period is determined, storage can be added to log insight by following the Increase the Storage Capacity of the VMware Aria Operations for Logs Virtual Appliance procedure.
