Issue/Introduction

During the NSX upgrade pre-checks, the following error may be encountered on edge nodes:

"Connection status of compute manager XYZ of type value: 'vCenter' is COMPUTE_MANAGER_CONNECTION_STATUS_DOWN. Please restore the connection before continuing."

This error indicates that NSX is unable to communicate with the associated Compute Manager (vCenter Server), which is a critical requirement for managing transport nodes and coordinating the upgrade process. Ensuring a stable and active connection to the Compute Manager is essential before proceeding with the upgrade.

Cause

This issue occurs when the Compute Manager (vCenter Server) loses connectivity with NSX, resulting in a DOWN status under System > Fabric > Compute Managers in the NSX UI.

A common cause of this issue is a certificate mismatch—if the vCenter certificate has been replaced but was not successfully updated or synchronized with NSX, the connection may fail.

Additional factors that can contribute to this issue include:

  • Expired vCenter certificates preventing authentication.
  • Network connectivity issues between NSX Manager and vCenter.
  • Incorrect or missing credentials for the vCenter Compute Manager registration in NSX.
  • vCenter service restarts or outages that disrupt the connection.
  • Firewall or security policies blocking API communication between NSX and vCenter.

Resolution

Follow steps provided in Resolution section of 

Rerun Pre Checks to confirm resolution.

To resolve this issue, follow the steps outlined in the Resolution section of the KB:
After the vCenter Server certificate is replaced, the compute manager connection is "Down" in the NSX UI

 

Once the steps are completed, rerun the Pre-Checks to confirm the issue is resolved and the Compute Manager connection is restored.
